Everyone repeats the desmo valve scare, but the intervals are long now and a good independent shop is reasonable. I think the reputation is a decade out of date. Change my mind.
Cheaper options exist if you shop the off-season.
You are right that it is exaggerated, but budget for it honestly. An Italian bike rewards an owner who plans and punishes one who defers.
My parallel twin costs me almost nothing and I sleep fine. Some of us just want to ride, not schedule. No shade, just a different priority.
Long valve intervals until the one that is not, and then your wallet feels Italian too.
I went the opposite way and never looked back.
